FURTHER TO THIS I HAVE THIS ONE THAT EBAY REMOVED AS THEY BELIEVE THAT SOMEONE MAY REFILL AND REUSE IT, AND AS WILL BECOME EVIDENT, IT IS WORKED TO THE EXTERIOR AND CUT DOWN SO WOULD NOT BE A GREAT SHELL CASING TO REUSE! (GROUCH OVER)! LOL
HERE I HAVE FOR SALE
A RARE
BRITISH 18 POUNDER
SHELL CASING
WITH
CHINESE DESIGN
OF
VASE AND FLOWERS
AS CAN BE SEEN FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHS, AT SOME POINT IN IT'S LIFE IT HAS BEEN CUT DOWN, ALTHOUGH THE CUT WOULD SEEM TO ME TO BE OLD
HAVING HANDLED, OWNED AND SOLD MANY CASINGS OVER THE YEARS, I THINK THAT THIS MAY BE A QUITE RARE CHINESE CORPS EXAMPLE, AS IT HAS A REALLY ASIAN FEEL TO ME
Almost 200,ooo Chinese workers were recruited as manual labourers for the Allied forces in France, Egypt, the French colonies, and in Mesopotamia and Palestine. The French and British Governments, short of labour on the Western Front, launched a massive campaign to recruit peasants from rural China on four or five year contracts, offering generous wages and a promise they would not have to work in dangerous areas. Most served on the Western Front, and many were sent to France via Canada where they expressed their artistic talents by making various artefacts for sale and in decorating their camps... Decorated shell casings and other trench art pieces that can be attributed to the Chinese Labour Corps are very rare.
(source: Jane A. Kimball, Trench Art an Illustrated History)
ALTHOUGH IT IS CUT DOWN, I THINK THIS MAY BE OF INTEREST TO A SERIOUS COLLECTOR WHO MAY AGREE WITH MY VIEW THAT IT MAY BE CHINESE LABOUR CORPS, AND THEREFORE VERY RARE
AS WITH ALL TRENCH ART SHELL CASINGS, THE NATIONALITY OF THE ARTIST CANNOT BE DETERMINED BY THE NATIONALITY OF THE SHELL CASING. WHAT EVER DETRITUS WAS LEFT BEHIND BECAME EASY PICKINGS FOR THOSE WHO WISHED TO CREATE A PIECE, REGARDLESS OF IT'S ORIGINS
FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT AWARE, IT IS ALSO VERY RARE TO HAVE A SIGNED PIECE (ALTHOUGH THERE ARE EXAMPLES) AS IT WAS ILLEGAL FOR THE SOLDIERS TO REMOVE SHELL CASINGS AS THEY WERE STILL THE LEGAL PROPERTY OF THE GOVERNMENT
I BELIEVE THAT AFTER THE WAR, THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT COMMANDEERED ALL THE DETRITUS ON THE FRENCH BATTLEFIELDS AND MADE IT ILLEGAL TO REMOVE WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION. I WILL CHECK OUT THE FACTS ON THAT AND MAYBE DO AN ARTICLE ON WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BATTLEFIELD DETRITUS POST WAR
DIMENSIONS:
H 7 1/2" (19cm)
W 4" (10cm)
UNPACKAGED WEIGHT: 1.222kg
AS FOUND CONDITION TO EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL PATINA
THE CASING IS DATED 1916 AND ALTHOUGH THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO MANUFACTURER STAMPS TO THE BASE* I CANNOT DISCERN WHO THE MANUFACTURER MAY HAVE BEEN. (I AM HOPING TO VISIT THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM, LONDON, OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS TO SEE IF I CAN FIND A DEFINITIVE LIST OF MANUFACTURER BACK STAMPS)
*THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO LETTER 'F's ON THE BASE WHICH WOULD SUGGEST THAT THE SHELL WAS REFILLED AFTER FIRING AT LEAST TWICE WHICH MAY ACCOUNT FOR THE CROSSING OUT OF ONE MANUFACTURERS MARK AND THE STAMPING OF ANOTHER. FURTHER TO THIS THERE ARE ALSO 3 ARROW MARKS (SIGNIFYING THAT THEY ARE FROM THE MOD) WHICH APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN ADDED AT SEPARATE TIMES
I AM SELLING THIS PIECE FOR A FRIEND OF MINE WHO PICKED IT UP RECENTLY IN LILLE, FRANCE
HE IS LOOKING FOR OFFERS AROUND
£70
THIS IS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DAMAGE AND ALSO TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE POTENTIAL RARITY OF THE SHELL CASING
